How to Start a Gratitude Practice

Yes, you can be happy it’s Friday, but today TGIF stands for Thanks & Gratitude Increase Fulfillment.

Our brains are hardwired to pay more attention to – and sometimes dwell on – things that are a problem, an unknown, or an irritation. One simple way to disrupt this hardwiring is to have a regular practice of thinking about the things that ARE going well or that make you happy.

Scientifically proven to increase happiness and reduce stress, the practice of gratitude helps us break free from negativity and embrace the abundance in our lives.

While there are a lot of different ways to practice gratitude, here’s a version I like because it really builds that thankfulness muscle.

  1. Grab a piece of paper and something to write with. (Writing by hand is best as it forces us to slow down and really think. It also changes the way our brain processes information.)
  2. Set a timer for 60 seconds.
  3. Write down as many things as you can that you are grateful for, make you happy, bring you joy, or are going well.
  4. Take a moment to reread your list and appreciate the positivity that exists in your life.

You might want to:

  • Make this a daily practice. Start each morning or end each day with this exercise.
  • Use it as a conversation piece with family or friends at your next meal.
  • Start your next meeting with this exercise, then have each person share 1 thing from their list.

Thankful to have you in my circle,

Jenny
